Final Blog

Hello,

Since the beginning of the semester, I have had some organizational issues. Also, some issues with grammar and punctuation. Now, I feel that those issues have been remedied. The strategies that have helped me the most have to be in class discussions and office appointments. In class discussions helped emphasize the fact that everyone has an opinion and there are many ways to look at situations. The office meeting helped me find a singular focus to better organize my papers. The easiest paper to write was the last paper. I feel like I took the proper steps to improve my writing skills in the first two papers that I was prepared to have a clear and easily understood idea for my last paper. As for the most beneficial lesson, I feel that all the work that we did on citations were the best. As a result of these lesson, I feel very confident in my up coming college years to write college level papers.

Thank you,
Aaron

Poettry for April 1st

Hello,

Unlike most men, I enjoy reading feminist literature. This is a direct reflection of my love of psychology. The United Stated place copious amounts of emphasis on male dominance and superiority. In my last psychology class, my class mates and I learned that female rights have plateaued and have been at this constant state since the the '70s. I believe men should not be superior to women just because they are men. There are many complex characteristics that make people better candidates for various tasks. Some characteristics being leadership skills, communication skills, and the list goes on. There are my thoughts on the poetry packet overall.

The Flea

Hello,

MARK but this flea - marked by lust
It suck'd me first, and now sucks thee, - the man found his prey and she accepted
A sin, nor shame, nor loss of maidenhead - the man and woman had sex
enjoys before it woo...swells with one blood made of two - passionate and loving sex

O stay, three lives in one flea spare - the man feels he can spare her life because he loves her
more than married are...Our marriage bed, and marriage temple is - the women trusts him and   loves him
Though use make you apt to kill me,
Let not to that self-murder added be,
And sacrilege, three sins in killing three. - he must kill her because that is what he does=has sex and then kills the person he has sex with. Even if he has feelings for that person.

Cruel and sudden, hast thou since
Purpled thy nail in blood of innocence? - her dead body

Will waste, as this flea's death took life from thee. - the flea, lust or love, died and so the man had to kill her. "Will waste" - he loved her, but had to kill her because he is sick in the head

First Blog on Poetry

Hello,

My favorite poem is Tonight, Tonight by Smashing Pumpkins. I enjoy songs more than poetry. One because the words are read to me in the form of singing. Also, I like songs better because the listener can feel/hear the emotion through the melodies and  harmonies. Poetry is the shortest form of English writing, except for the Iliad and Odyssey,  that tells a story and conveys emotion. I will read pretty much anything, but I prefer poems over war and passion.

Last Blog of Dr. Faustus

Hello,

In a recent class discussion, we talked about how far is to far. Meaning, that no matter what happens God will always forgive anything and everything. He may even forgive Lucifer. The Scholars in this last reading backed up this point. They told Faustus to turn to God because God forgives all things. However, if a person is damned and does not turn to God for forgiveness, there is nothing that God can do. This is what happen to Faustus. He feels that I is so damned that nothing can be done to save him. That is why the devil comes to take Faustus away.

Blog # 3 of Dr. Faustus

Hello,

The best classroom debate I have been a part of in a while happen Monday. This debate ranged from topics of theology to black magic. It was a great time. Lindsey, in class I remember you saying something about Faustus does not believe there is a heaven, so why would he believe in hell. I find this statement interesting and true to the story. Yet, there remain another angle to look at. Faustus may not believe in those things, but he is willing at search for them to make sure heaven and hell truly do not exist. The truth in this being, Faustus always asks Mephistophilis what heaven and hell are like. Along with that, Faustus asks Mephistophilis what the origin of the universe is. Also, Faustus always asks to have books on star and planets.

Second Blog Over Scene Five

Hello,

Faustus sells his soul and body to Lucifer. Faustus gain the ability to raise people from the dead with his magic. Lucifer gains an other soul for his army. In the story, Faustus gives his terms of what Lucifer must give him in return for his soul to Mephistophilis. The terms being Faustus must be a spirit, Mephistophilis must be his servant, Mephistophilis must do all Faustus wishes, while in his home Faustus must be invisible, and he was granted a wife. This scene seemed informative and much easier to immerse myself in. The only thing that I noticed was that Faustus asks for all these things, but he never states for how long he will have these gifts. It will be interesting to see if this becomes relevant later.

First Blog on Dr. Faustus

Hello,

As of right now, I am not to into the story. When it comes to old English, there is a time period for me where I have to get reacquired with the way things are phrased. I need to know more of the story to really understand what is going on. It will take a bit, but I should be able to get into the story soon.

The last section of reading seemed ironic. Faustus brags that he is better than all of the main stream philosophers. He has been a lawyer, a clergymen, along with other jobs. All of this jobs have run out of luster because Faustus became to good for those jobs. The ironic part comes when Cornelius tell Faustus that, in the story, "He that is grounded in astrology" (7). Faustus is to good for moral subjects, but he needs those subjects in order to do magic.

In the beginning, the story tells of fortunes good or bad. I believe Faustus's fortunes are going to be bad. This comes from the thought that all stories that have characters experimenting with black magic and the devil have bad fortunes.

How Semester Is Going

Hello,

So far, I feel that the semester in English 210 is going well. This class has been the most challenging class that I have ever taken. When growing up, I always said that I enjoyed reading; but all the same, I was never good at it. Just this morning, I thought about how if I would not of come to college I would never of grasped the thought of pushing myself to read and understand the literature that I read. Also, if you remember from my first post, I might be going to Minnesota next year. By taking this class and doing my best to push myself, I feel that I well have a very good base to be able to do my best there.

"Fall of the House of Usher"-setting and point of view

Hello,

Setting - the context in which the action of the story occurs using time, place, and social environment

The opening line of the short story, "dull, dark, and soundless day in the autumn of the year" (3). Poe does a very nice job of setting up the setting in "The Fall of the House of Usher." The story takes place, with great detail, in the House of Usher, the apartments upstairs where Roderick and the narrator live, the vault where Roderick's sister is laid rest, and finally out side when the narrator is running away from the house because the house is being according to the text, "rushed asunder" (25).

Point of View

The story has to be written in objective point of view. The reader is told in the story not what is being thought and/or felt; rather, is supplied the story through actions and dialogue so that the reader can think and feel for his/her self. In the story, the moon is blood red and the house falls apart. The reader is not told how the narrator feels about this event, this feeling is left to the reader.

Compare and Contrast

Hello,

Both "The Birthmark" and "Bartleby" use in medias res, starting in the middle of the story; this helps the reader jump into the story. Also, in class flashback was used to compare how the story would of been different. With the use of flashback the stories would not of had such a dramatic ending. As for characters, the husband in "The Birthmark" and Bartleby in "Bartleby" did not change, static characters,  throughout the stories. The husband always  wanted the birthmark gone, and Bartleby never wanted to work. Also, the wife in "The Birthmark" and the lawyer in "Bartleby" were dynamic characters. Both characters under went a change within the stories.

To contrast, "The Birthmark" told the importance of leaving nature as nature intended. For characters, the character were very motivated. The wife was motivated to keep her husband happy, and the husband was motivated to have his wife's birthmark go away. As for "Bartleby" the reader is never told as to why the characters are not motivated in their actions.

I learned that all stories are somewhat the same. In the text book, I learned that all writing is a similar process with plot, setting, characters, theme, etc. Yet, stories differ by how the author uses these items of literature, and stories also differ from how each different reader interpret the story that is read.

Class dicussion Feb. 16, 2011

Hello,

Racism. Respectful. I see myself as not racists and respectful. These view were before I read the Peggy McIntosh article. However, now I feel very racist. This is not because of how I see the world and the people in it, it because of these privileges that me, a white person, never takes the time to realize. I had a conversation with a guy that I live next to a while ago about affirmative action. He said, "They, not white, have had enough time to change things and they, not white, have had more than enough opportunities to change their situation." How is this though? The system has stayed the same. The nation is still predominately run by white men. Along with that fact though, it seems that if a person of color wants to be accepted in today's society that person has to change to be more like the white man. Like the TV show Scrubs, Turk, an African American man receives respect only because he is a surgeon, but where does the non surgeon African American man stand? With no respect. This fact makes me sad.

EC post - 45% of Student Don't Learn Much In College

Hello,

This article was fascinating to me. In the article, "universities are being run more like corporations than educational institutions" (2). Why is this? Just like anything else that goes on in the world today, everything is run and based off of numbers. According to the text, "others argue that the U.S. must produce more college graduates to remain competitive globally, but if students aren't learning much that calls into question whether boosting graduation rates will provide that edge" (1). This back up the point that the world is all about numbers. Personally, I don't care how the United States looks globally. There are problems here that need to be taking care of; therefore, they should be taken care of. As a nation we always try to do two things at one time: improve and match that improvement to the rest of the world. Yet, if we do not split our time between two things and just focus on one thing, won't the other thing, how we stack up globally, fall into place? As long as the system runs efficiently, the U.S. will look great.
Lastly, in the text, "[s]ocial engagement generally does not help student performance"(2). I like to do things on my own and only ask for help when I am lost or need feedback. It is nice to know that I am helping myself gain knowledge by doing so.

Fake Twitter Accounts

Hello,

The text simply states that people have fake twitter accounts that make the people that are posting seem like important figures in society: Sarah Palin, Chuck Norris, and Hosni Mubarak. Yet, I believe that the text is trying to say something more then is actually said. The text is saying, without saying, that people in today's society take things at face value, people do not question things, people receive information form unreliable sources and accept that information. In the text, "Several of my followers  still don't understand that I'm a parody." At times it seems, even for me, that as a society we all can find ourselves so far detached from society that it is often time easier to just believe something then to research what is read or said to find the credibility within it.

Review of Paper Writing Process

Hello,

Overall, I feel that my first research paper for ENGL 210 went fairly well. I felt confident in my topic choice and my presentation. However after the meeting, I knew there was still work to be done. The meeting really helped me bring corrections to the surface that need to be addressed. I just feel that the meeting needed to be later. I will just have to come in for help more on the next paper. Also, I feel that I am still not understand the why and how of the thesis. I thought that I did it correct, but was then told that I was too specific. Though this is not a bad thing, I am just not sure how to explain the how properly.

The Metamorphosis

Hello Everyone,

Why is Gregor so concerned about going to work and not at all concerned about being morphed into a bug?

In the text, Gregor's father's business runs out of money. I feel that because of his father's business failing, Gregor does something stupid. Gregor goes to his boss for money to cover that debt; he then barrows or gambles that money. With this action, Gregor realizes that he has shamed the family name and it is then his responsibility to pay off the debt. In the story, that is why the sister and mother want to take care of Gregor; because, they have forgiven him. The same holds true for the father, he wants to harm Gregor because he has not forgiven Gregor.

Research Paper idea

Hello everyone,

At the beginning of We, D-503 talks about how living in the One-State makes life better. He goes on later in the novel to explore his own freewill. Finally, at the of the novel D-503 goes back to loving the One-State and not  even knowing about freewill. For my research paper, I would like to explore whether freewill or having a governing body making ones every move for that person is better.

The end of the book - #5

Hello everyone,

Pg. 167 - D-503 helps O and their baby get to I-330 behind the wall so that the two of them may be safe. Also, so O will not have the baby taken from her after she gives birth to the child.

Pg. 187 - The Benefactor shows the hypocrisy of the ancestor's Christian believes and God. How the God was said to be a God of love, but he kill with fire and blood. Also, this God sent people to the pits of Hell.

Pg. 189 - D-503 seems to wish that he was Jesus because if he was he would have a mother. This mother, like Mary, would stand beside him no matter what. Like Mary did when Jesus was being nailed to the cross.

In this last reading I found it interesting on how many direct religious link there were. Yet, the end does not match up with these links as I thought that I would, but the ending was very similar to Jesus' death. According to the Benefactor, "In paradise, they don't know desire, they don't know pity, they don't know love. There, angels, the slaves of God"(187-188). This is how the book ended. D-503 was brain washed from his real self, the free thinking self, and turned back into an angel of God, the Benefactor. At the end of the book D-503 speaks of the resistance and says reason, the One-State, will again take back control.

#4

Hello everyone,

What would I hate most about living in the One-State? I feel to answer this question, I must try to put myself in that situation. Not having parents, not being able to go outside the Green Wall, not being able to get married, these things would make anyone crazy. Yet, how would a person be driven crazy by something that person does not know? While in the One-State, a person belongs to the One-State. I feel that for me, I would not miss my family, my freedom, or the right to get married because I would not even no that those freedoms exist. If something come up, such as in D-503's case, that made me question everything that I was raised with, that is what I would hate. To know that everything that I always knew was true is now false.

Blog # 3

Hello again,

I believe that both biographical and historical strategies are closely related in this novel. In the introduction to the story, the reader was informed that Zamyatin, the author, was born and raised in Russia. With being born and raised in Russia during the time of the Bolshevik Revolution and World War 1, comes the understanding that most of the world at this time was in a poor economic state. Russia stood as one of the worst strong nations. The people were unhappy with there leadership and this allowed for the beginning of communism to rise in Russia. While in Russia, Zamyatin loved his country; yet while writing works that were looked down upon by his nation's leaders, he was imprisoned. With this, I for see D-503's down fall having to do with him acknowledging his own option and being sent to the operation room.  Also, in this last reading I found it funny that D-503 asks, "Do you ever feel that your shadow sees you?" I just thought of the jokes, "In Soviet Russia car drive you or In Soviet Russia TV watch you."

Intro to me and WE

Hello all,

My name is Aaron Hauger. I am a freshmen that is studying Psychology, Tech Theater, and statistics. In my free time I enjoy cooking, thinking, and hanging out with friends. Life is every strange for me right now, as it probably is for everyone, but I feel like I need to do something bigger than go to USD. With Psychology I feel like I should to the University of Minnesota. Anyone with something to say on this matter feel free to let me know what you think.

Now, I am not really sure if we had to blog about the reading in WE, if we did here it goes.
The reading really spoke to me. As a student in high school, I read 1984. Both books are very close in plot so far. One thing that is different between the two novels that I thought were odd, it seems that in WE everything under the One-State makes everyone equal, yet women seem like they are property. Whenever women are referred to, they are all said to be registered to someone and the men are never said to be. Along with this, these women are registered to  more than one man. I also feel, that reading the v to chapter 1 really helped with getting into the story. It is easy to see parallels between Yevgeny Zamyatin and D-503. They both love their country and would not like to be anywhere else in the world.

Sincerely,
Aaron Hauger
